Different Day, Same Lesson

Just spoke with a favorite friend about a scary but ultimately good experience he had on his most recent project.

Week before tech. The person who hires you has just seen your run-through, calls you into his office, and says "it isn't working. Fix it." You think it through, and realize that in trying to fit the play to your perception of the aesthetic of the institution by which you've been hired, you have moved away from your OWN aesthetic -- which is, not coincidentally, probably why you were hired in the first place. Gulp.

What do you do? If you're my brilliant, brilliant friend, you throw cold water on your face, walk into your rehearsal hall 15 minutes later, tell your stage manager "follow me" and then walk the stage saying "cut this. cut this. cut this and this." And it works out. It might not work out, but in this case it does.

The lesson? Again, I quote (probably mis-quote) Herr Dietz:

"The material is not fragile. YOU may be fragile. But the material is not fragile."
