Learning a valuable lesson of late...which is that you don't get to pick your moments of opportunity. They come when they come.
What does that mean? It's that moments of opportunity can also create moments of heartbreak, anxiety, indecision, and come-to-jesus. Can create moments when you need to choose between following this admittedly slightly bonkers idea that it makes sense to make up stories for a living and fulfilling the expectations to people around you...fulfilling OBLIGATIONS you have made. Your "big break" can come in the middle of a big project at work, at a time that is totally inopportune for your love life, at a time when your family needs you.
And you gotta choose. You gotta decide where the writing fits in with the rest of your life.
So sure it's easy to say "the writing ALWAYS comes first! I suffer for art!" But how low a paycheck, how small a promise, how small a probability does it take for you to give up the 401(k)?
I don't have an answer to this right now.
