On Making A Difference

This from Novelist Jim Crace. Does it apply to theater? All our art? I don't know. Depending on the day.

Speaking of his dead, working-class father:
"He'd be proud that I've written books.
But he'd be prouder if I made a difference.
And I can't convince myself that literature makes a difference.
When I go around England and I see people reading my work,
they're clones of me."

Do any of us do more than find our clones? Even the most outlandish activists of us?
