On Collaboration

Thoughts from Steven Dietz, Sheila Daniels

Know the difference between entitlement, pride, and ownership.

"Yes it's a collaboration, but who is at the helm?"

FORGE collaboration, rather than WAITING for collaboration

As a playwright, a workshop (or ANY collaboration) will work better if you come into the room saying "this is what I want to work on, and these are the questions I have" -- because the thing is, you KNOW what doesn't work in your plays. And if you don't, then pick something you're curious about. Go in with FOCUS.

You should have an answer to the following question "If we fuck up everything else on this play, what should we get right?"

Believe that your play is worth people's time and energy.

Be ready to say to people who are sponsoring a workshop "Thanks for these tools. I need this one and this one and this one."
