in a letter to Olga Knipper in "Dear Writer, Dear Actress"
"If over half the cast couldn't get into the mood then it's the play's fault -- number one. Number two, once and for all you must stop worrying about success or failure. Your business is to work step by step, from day to day, steadily, and to be prepared for inevitable mistakes and failures, in a word, to follow your own path and leave competition to others. What is important for beginners, and so very useful, is to write or act and be aware that you are not doing well enough."
