Things I learned in New York

At the Theatre Masters showcase

(1) Apply, apply, apply to programs for emerging playwrights. If nothing else, you want them on your resume -- but they're also a great way to develop new work (Molly)
(2) Agents are interested in your plays, but they're also going to want to see a screenplay -- that's where they'll make money on you (Agents)
(3) It is advantageous, if you want to go into film or TV, to be seen as a New York Playwright (Tom)
(4) It would be a good idea to have a 25-minute short, produced, on a reel and ready to show people "you want to be part of the festival circuit" (Tom)
(5) For the purposes of schmoozing (ay, yi yi), have three things to talk about. Example: the play you're working on, the showcase that's going up, and the development workshop you're doing this summer
(5) Join the dramatists guild (Julia)
(6) You don't need an agent until you're dealing with complicated contracts. You're your own best advocate
(7) Don't cultivate the agents, they won't talk to you yet. Cultivate the agents' assistants (Tom)
