Thoughts from Mentors

These are distilled notes about my work from my first big meeting mentors Suzan Zeder, Steven Dietz and Daniel Alexander Jones.

DIG DEEPER into stories. Go to the scary places. Right now many of my scripts have madness running alongside them. Get that madness INTO the stories.

DON'T RESCUE characters from the hard stuff. Don't let them leave the room. Let them say the terrible stuff. Let them do the horrible thing. Trick yourself into writing things spontaneously that you'll never use. Listen to what your characters have to tell you. Cut later.

Cross the raging river.

There is no such thing as doing this right.

My tendency is to find the heat in something, feel it burn me, and put down the iron.

Understand the difference between a character's truth and the play's truth.
